USGS hypsographic (contour) maps were used in the eastern part of the island of Vieques. There were no CRIM data available and USGS 1:20,000 was used in this part of the island.

First: Digital Elevation Models were derived first from CRIM basemap 3D vector files having x,y,z coordinates. Elevation information was registered in mass points and 3d CAD files converted to ESRI Shapefiles. Second: Derivation of Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) files from 3D shapefiles. TINs were generated and cut by 7.5 min quadrangles and coastlines. Third: TIN to Raster conversion - performed using the following options: floating point, natural neighbors interpolation, cell size 5 meters. Fourth: DEM Mosaicing - aggregated 71 quadrangles, except Mona and Desecheo islands. Fifht: Contour maps were derived from each quadrangle CRIM data DEMs. All quadrangle contour maps were merged to form one contour layer for all Puerto Rico, Vieques and Culebra Islands. These contour files were generated as a function of slope classes (degrees): 0 to 6, 6 to 12 and 12 to maximum value(81). For 0 to 6 degree class the contour interval is 1 meter For 6 to 12 degree class the contour interval is 5 meter For 12 to max degree class the contour interval is 10 meter.
